My Approach
“I have a theory too.
My theory is about moments.
Moments of impacts.
My theory is that, these moments of impact, these flashes of high intensity that completely turn our lives upside down actually end up defining who we are...
A moment of impact has potential for change, has ripple effects far beyond what we can predict.
Sending some particles crashing together making them closer than before, while sending others off into great ventures, ending where you never thought you’d find them.
You see that’s the best thing of moments like these, you can’t, no matter how hard you try, control how they are going to effect you.
You just got to let these colliding particles land where they may and wait until the next collision.”
My methodology is inseparable from my background as a certified pilates and yoga instructor, as well as, as my career in gymnastics. Sessions are a blend of breath work, bodywork, soul work, meditation, pilates (mat and equipment-based), and yoga, with influence from traditional physical therapy.
Beyond Physical Therapy is available to treat a wide range of pathologies, as well as, maintain general wellbeing with an innovative approach centered around building wellness from the spine outward.
moments of impact
A year following the creation of Beyond Physical Therapy, this methodology was refocused after I suffered a severe spinal cord and intervertebral disc injury that changed my life physically, mentally, and emotionally.
This “moment of impact” led to an unavoidable lifestyle shift that simultaneously sparked a fire to innovate how we live in and from these bodies - starting with the spine.
Living from the spine
In yoga, we talk about “living from the spine.” This means to connect with our internal world before looking externally. In Beyond Physical Therapy, the same is done to manage a wide range of conditions, as well as, to cultivate and maintain holistic well-being. Starting with root before expanding outward.
This is my story and moment of impact. I believe that everybody will end up with their own constellation of these moments.
I started my career as a traveling physical therapist working in various settings and clinics around the country. In my travels, I became frustrated with corporate and government-run healthcare and the many complications that we all talk about regularly regarding the healthcare system here in America and the world at large.
As a reaction to this, Beyond Physical Therapy was curated - an alchemy of movement-based medicine aimed at treating not just the body, but the mind and soul as well.
Not a business, obsessed with continual growth, but rather a raw offering of quality healthcare.
These sessions are for you. They can be held whenever best suits your unique needs. A sliding scale can be offered for need-based cases. Group classes, the occasional tasteful newsletter, and online content are also all affordable and/or free options to get you the tools and help you need to make peace with and feel at home in your body.
Hi, I’m Shan.
Constant vibration, intelligent movement, and inner exploration were built into my DNA.
My mom, a lifelong fitness enthusiast and physical therapist assistant, taught movement classes throughout her life adapting along the way to the trend of each decade from aerobics, to pilates, yoga, and on.
From a young age, my mom instilled in me the importance of movement for the body and its medicinal qualities. In my teenage years, it was not long before I started instructing movement-based classes as well.
…but before we get carried away, jumping to the start.
When I was 3, I discovered gymnastics.
I trained competitively throughout my school-aged life.
Sustaining four traumatic elbow fractures throughout my training, I developed an appreciation for the human body and its innate ability to heal. I went on to compete as a colligate athlete at Seattle Pacific University.
After obtaining a bachelor’s in Applied Human Biology and a minor in exercise sciences, I took a year to dive into self-exploration and submerged into various spiritual practices before completing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
